MSK Attorneys Mentioned in Law360 for "Avatar" Suit

April 15, 2015

MSK attorneys were mentioned in several Law360 articles for their work involving the movie "Avatar."

Robert Rotstein, Elaine Kim, Matthew Williams and Alfredo Ortega were mentioned in the article, "9th Circ. Won't Revive Artist’s ‘Avatar’ Rip-Off Suit," published by Law360 on April 15, 2015. The article discusses the Ninth Circuit shooting down an appeals bid by a visual effects designer in favor of our client. A three-judge Ninth Circuit panel ruled 2-1 in favor of Cameron and his production company Lightstorm Entertainment Inc., saying Morawski’s breach of contract claim relies entirely on the inference that Cameron used his ideas based on access and substantial similarity.

Gregory Olaniran, Aaron Wais, Matthew Williams and Robert Rotstein were also mentioned in the article, "James Cameron Sheds Another 'Avatar' Suit," published by Law360 on January 21, 2014. The article discusses our win in dismissing the billion-dollar copyright infringement suit Moore v. Lightstorm Entertainment et al. A Maryland federal judge ruled in favor of our client, shooting down allegations that elements of the 2009 film were lifted from lesser-known works.
