Eric German will be speaking on the "How Stella Got Her Masters Back" panel at SXSW 2012. He will discuss the reversion of copyrights due to begin in 2013, per legislation enacted in 1978, and the "work for hire" exception. Sound recordings, commissioned and paid for by the record labels, fall under that exception. Performance of a song does not translate to copyright ownership.
