Survey to Track Female Roles As Lead Counsel and Neutrals

New York Law Journal
September 29, 2016

Lauren Wachtler’s recent involvement in a groundbreaking study was mentioned in the article, “Survey to Track Female Roles As Lead Counsel and Neutrals,” published by the New York Law Journal on September 29, 2016.

In a “man’s world” many have noticed the imbalance between men and women in the courtroom. Lauren Wachtler and the other 6 former women Chairs of the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section of the New York State Bar Associations have organized and developed a large-scale survey to discover the quantitative data behind men v women in New York state and federal courts and in mediation and arbitration. As the results come in, the organizing team will compile them and develop a strategy of how to balance the gender inequality within courts, law firms, and in-house legal departments.

Currently, the survey is being widely received and disseminated among the judiciary in the New York Federal District Courts and Courts of Appeal, the State’s Appellate Divisions in every Department in the State, and the Commercial Divisions of the Supreme Court throughout the State with the support of the Judges in those courts. Previous research has examined similar topics in various US states, but this will be a fairly new study in the state of New York. We’re very excited to be part of this unprecedented research that could change the landscape of New York court rooms.
