Small Claims Should Not Cost Small Fortunes: Handling the Cost of Pro Bono Representation

Washington D.C.
October 10, 2015

Jay Rosenthal will be speaking on a panel titled “Small Claims Should Not Cost Small Fortunes: Handling the Cost of Pro Bono Representation” at the at ABA Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries’ Annual Meeting.

Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLAs) routinely review and refer copyright disputes and litigation to pro bono volunteers, asking clients to bear any out-of-pocket expenses. The high cost of discovery and trial often limit such litigation and an attorney’s options to pursue claims. This panel will review the Copyright Office’s proposal for a Copyright Small Claims Board and discuss strategies and ethical considerations to limit the costs and scope of representation.
