AI and Copyright Law: U.S. Copyright Office Announces Public Webinar

MSK Client Alert
June 2, 2023

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) raises many fundamental copyright law questions about copyrightability, ownership, rights and enforcement. In light of the myriad questions that AI raises in the copyright world, we are excited to share an upcoming webinar that may be of great interest.

The U.S. Copyright Office has announced a free virtual, public webinar on June 28, 2023 at 2pm ET, focused on the current Office guidance related to copyright registrations for creative works containing components generated by AI. The seminar announcement focuses on registration issues and not the larger questions that are left to the courts. However, it will be valuable to hear from the Office not only on how creators and producers can register works that include some AI-generated material, and how to identify that material on applications, but it may also address some of the larger questions regarding copyrightability—at least from the Office’s point of view.

The experts will walk attendees through the Office's March 2023 Registration Guidance and address some frequently asked questions. Moreover, at the end of the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to submit their own questions.

This is an excellent opportunity to stay up to date with the evolving landscape and gain a deeper understanding of copyright registration principles applicable to AI-generated works.
