Steve Metalitz Represents Copyright Owners Regarding DMCA

May 5, 2009

Steven Metalitz spoke on behalf of copyright owners, including the Motion Picture Association of America and Association of American Publishers, at the first of four hearings on proposed exemptions to the DMCA held at Stanford University by the US Copyright Office.

Steve said copyright holders "are not opposed to recognition and exemption along the lines of the existing exemptions" to the DMCA's prohibition against circumvention of measures that control access to copyrighted works. Representatives of the University of California at Berkeley argued that the current exemption for using clips from DVDs by film and media professors should be broadened to other classroom settings. With respect to the use of these copyrighted materials as teaching tools, Metalitz noted that new channels and formats can be used without circumventing DMCA controls.

Additional hearings are scheduled May 7, 8 and 10 at the Library of Congress.
