“Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!” said Dorothy Gale in the classic Wizard of Oz. For safari enthusiast Carl Kleidman, lions and tigers and bears, oh my it is! With the hustle and bustle of the big city, Carl fancies the open space and natural habitat of the African safari. Having explored the animal kingdoms of South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya and Botswana, Carl finds his close encounters with the wild “life affirming.”
With the advent of modern technology, being out in nature the way it was intended to be is a concept we understand little today. Conquering the wide open spaces of Africa, Carl feels connected to the animals – how they live, what their struggles are, and how they cope. During one his safari endeavors, Carl watched as a colony of lions prepared for the hunt, mounted, killed and devoured a giraffe. During another adventure, he travelled to the Serengeti through the height of migration and watched as wildebeest attempted to cross the Masai Mara river in search of better pastures, treading lightly to avoid the wrath of the crocodiles hunting for prey below them.
Carl’s connection with animals began as a child, when he would take in all the strays in the neighborhood, overlooking this dismay of his mother, and continues today through his philanthropic work. When he is not out exploring the wild, you can find Carl at the local animal shelter every couple of weeks, cleaning out cages and helping his fellow volunteers. When asked what he was going to do next, Carl exclaimed “Go to Rwanda to see the gorillas!”
